Leo Santa Cruz Explains Why He Wanted To Fight Gervonta Davis

Leo Santa Cruz’s wish for a showdown with Gervonta Davis has been granted but why did he want the matchup?

Santa Cruz is the WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Champion. He has a chance to capture gold in the lightweight division when he collides with Davis this Saturday, October 31. “Tank” is the WBA (Regular) Lightweight Champion. Both titles will be on the line in the main event of a Showtime Boxing PPV.

Ahead of the title clash, BoxingScene.com caught up with Santa Cruz, who explained why he was clamoring for a fight against Davis.

“I wanted this fight because most people were saying that I was scared to fight big names, that I was always getting tune-up fights. Gervonta Davis is a great fighter. He has great skills, great power and who better to pick than Gervonta Davis as a great opponent for me? In this fight, I’m gonna show the world that I’m not scared of nobody and I can fight whoever.”

As far as being the underdog is concerned, Santa Cruz says he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s just more motivation for me. I get more motivated because I wanna prove them wrong and show them that I have what it takes to go out there and beat him.”

As of this writing, Davis is a -700 favorite. Santa Cruz is the +400 underdog.

Up to this point, Santa Cruz has a pro boxing record of 37-1-1. He has scored 19 knockout wins along the way.

Davis has a perfect record of 23-0. He’s only been the distance once as a professional and that was over six years ago.

Davis vs. Santa Cruz will take place inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Fans will be in attendance and a reduced capacity.
