The current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards has expressed his desire to face either Sean Strickland or Dricus du Plessis next.
The latter duo are expected to face each other at UFC 297 on January 20th, 2024, in what will be Strickland’s first defense of his middleweight belt. The former won the belt after beating Israel Adesanya via a unanimous decision. Meanwhile, Edwards will defend his title against Colby Covington on December 17th, 2023, at UFC 296.
Edwards maintained his title after he beat Kamaru Usman during UFC 286. That was the second win on the bounce against Usman after having beaten the latter to win the title in the first place, showing that Edwards’ focus may be beyond the welterweight division. So, moving forward, Edwards is eying a move up to middleweight. And in doing so, Edwards was hopeful that this could take place at UFC 300.
“Any of them two would be great to fight. I’m big myself so, I feel like that would be perfect. Going out there and becoming double champ, the first ever from the U.K. anyway. To do it, that’s definitely one of my goals. It’s in the cards for sure.
“Next April would be perfect, to be honest. The division right now there’s nobody that’s exciting. To go out there and do that, that would be perfect. UFC 300, UFC 300, putting me on that card would be massive. Let’s see,” Edward said
