Leon Edwards Warns Dana White That He Will ‘Smash’ Khamzat Chimaev
Leon Edwards has sent a warning to Dana White and the UFC brass.
Edwards is the number three ranked UFC welterweight. Khamzat Chimaev isn’t even ranked but there is a ton of buzz surrounding him. As a result of Chimaev’s rapidly growing popularity and success inside the Octagon, he’s already being thrown to the wolves. Edwards is set to collide with Chimaev on December 19.
During an interview with MMAFighting.com, Edwards said he wants to spoil the UFC’s plans for Chimaev by taking him out.
“Outside a title shot, I believe he’s the biggest fight. Obviously, [Jorge] Masvidal would have been good as well, but he turned the fight down. This is the biggest fight to guarantee me what’s next.
“That was my thinking going into this. The UFC loves him. Dana [White] loves him. They all think he can’t be beat. When I go out there and take him out, I can’t see what they can say next to give me my title shot. I’d be on a nine-fight win streak. I believe this was the fight to make and now here we are.”
Edwards also said that he feels confident in his ability to dust Chimaev and move on to fighting for the UFC Welterweight Title.
“That’s exactly how I feel, right. Dana, I’m going to smash your boy. I cannot wait. It’s going to be a very good night come December.”
White hasn’t been shy in expressing his excitement over Chimaev. The UFC boss has even gone as far as to say that Chimaev is special and someone who he has never seen before.
Edwards is riding an eight-fight winning streak. He hasn’t suffered a loss since December 2015. That defeat was to current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman.
