“When I asked if Leon Edwards is next in line to fight for the welterweight championship, Dana White’s reply was “100%,” TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter tweeted.
Edwards has been part of the UFC since 2014, but has never gotten a title shot. He has notable wins against Vicente Luque, Donald Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos, to name a few.
“I feel [the UFC] sees it,” Edwards told ESPN back in November.
“They now believe I am well-deserving. There is no one else for Usman to fight. I’m the guy saying ‘yes’ all the time. I’m the guy fighting. I feel the promotion and I am on the same page, let’s say that…”
Edwards (19-3) is most recently coming off a five-round decision win over Nate Diaz. His last loss came from Usman in 2015 via unanimous decision.
Usman (20-1), on the other hand, has had five successful title defenses. He won the belt back in 2019 over Tyron Woodley via unanimous decision. He has not lost in the UFC.
