Leonard Ellerbe: Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia Is The Biggest Fight In Boxing
Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe believes Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia is the biggest fight to make in the world of boxing.
Garcia, who is the interim WBC Lightweight Champion, has a mandate to fight Devin Haney. Despite this, “KingRy” has been targeting the likes of “Tank” and Manny Pacquiao. Davis has also expressed interest in sharing the ring with Garcia. The two even had a heated exchange over the phone during an edition of Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson.
During an interview with Fight Hype, Ellerbe shared his belief that Davis vs. Garcia could be boxing’s biggest matchup (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“It’s an excellent fight. And actually, in my opinion, it’s the biggest fight in boxing – period. It’s the biggest fight in boxing. I know a lot of people will disagree with me on that, but you know, that’s my opinion.”
Ellerbe went on to say that fight fans are eagerly waiting to see if the matchup will be made official.
“There’s a tremendous buzz about, you know, both guys. Both guys are attractions, big-time attractions in the sport. You know, Ryan gets a lot of flak because there’s a lot of jealousy. You know, he’s a good, young fighter, and he took care of his business. And congrats to him.”
Davis is the WBA (Regular) Lightweight and WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Champion. He’s coming off a highlight-reel knockout victory over Leo Santa Cruz. Garcia’s interim WBC Title win was earned thanks to a seventh-round TKO over Luke Campbell.
As of late, there’s been a lot of chatter about a potential clash between Garcia and Pacquiao. Steve Kim, formerly of ESPN, reports that while no deal is done, the fight would be an exhibition bout.
