LFA 6 Highlights: Dern’s Streak Continues
23-year old Brazilian jiu jitsu phenom Mackenzie Dern improved to 3-0 in her MMA career on Friday, going the full fifteen minutes with Katherine Roy at LFA 6 and winning the bout by unanimous decision.
Whereas her last fight featured a stunning submission, Dern’s win over Roy displayed her growth in the other aspects of MMA. While her striking still has much room for improvement, Dern has shown tremendous promise since her MMA career began just 8 months ago.
The performance was slightly marred by the fact that Dern was unable to make the strawweight limit of 115 lbs. The fight was instead contested at a catchweight of 120 lbs., which Roy agreed to when her team learned that Dern would not be able to cut the extra five pounds.
Dern recently admitted that despite what Ronda Rousey did for Women’s MMA, she was never an inspiration for her because of her personality. The 23-year-old prospect says she plans on being “bigger”, and surpass what Rousey accomplished in the sport.
