Liam Smith is targeting a rematch with Canelo Alvarez, provided that he overcomes Chris Eubank Jr.
The two boxers will face each other on September 2nd, 2023, in what will be a follow-up to the first fight, where Smith stopped Eubank in the fourth round.
Another win for Smith would aid his cause in securing the bigger fights, while Eubank will no doubt have to deal with the calls for him to retire.
As for Alvarez, he faces Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023, in a battle of two undisputed champions.
And provided that Smith and Canelo win their next fights, the Liverpudlian was keen to face Alvarez again. After all, Smith did put up a competitive performance in 2016.
Although he lost his WBO junior middleweight belt after being stopped in the ninth round, Smith did look impressive.
“I think everyone knows I would. It was a fight that I loved. It was a fight that was my type of fight. I loved it, even though I got stopped in the ninth I loved every part of the fight.
“I had moments in the fight also. It’s not like I couldn’t hit Canelo. He was there to be hit and I landed enough shots, but I just wasn’t big enough and strong enough. But of course, I’d take that,” Smith
Nevertheless, the chances of a rematch are unlikely. With Canelo being at the age of 33, the Mexican may not have long to secure the biggest fights.
And with David Benavidez and Dmitry Bivol still plausible opponents, perhaps Alvarez’s focus will be elsewhere.
