Lightweight Boxing Fight Set For August 28 On DAZN
After waiting on Ryan Garcia, Jorge Linares is ready to move on. As a result, he faces another tough challenge during Golden Boy’s second fight card back since the coronavirus pandemic took over.
ESPN’s Steve Kim was the first to report that Linares (47-5) will fight Javier Fortuna inside the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio, California. The lightweights will fight on August 28, a Friday night, on DAZN. As of now, there are just rumors this could be for the interim WBC Lightweight Title.
“It was a no-brainer,” said Linares’ manager Jose De La Cruz. “I think it’s the right time for Jorge to fight for a world title, and to stay active, number one. He’ll be 35 by the time he fights. How many fights does he have left? We all want to know.”
Linares last fought in February, knocking out Carlos Morales for his 29th win via some form of knockout. “The Golden Boy” won the WBC Featherweight Title from Oscar Larios in 2007 and the WBC Lightweight Title in 2014 against Javier Prieto. During that time he became WBA and The Ring Lightweight Champion, defending those belts three times before losing it to Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2018.
“We wanted that fight [with Garcia], Jorge wanted that fight more than anybody,” De La Cruz went on to say. “I guess their camp is not being reasonable with Golden Boy.”
Fortuna (35-2-1) is on a two-fight win streak and is 2-1 with one no-contest in his last four fights. A former WBA Super-Featherweight Champion, the 30-year-old lost to Robert Easter Jr. to start 2018 before falling out of the ring against Adrian Granados later that year. He rebounded with wins over Al Toyogon and Carlos Morales, the last win coming in February.
Previous plans had Fortuna facing Luke Campbell for the interim Lightweight Title. A win against Linares can help Fortuna’s cause to fight champion Devin Haney.
This would be the second card back for Golden Boy, as Vergil Ortiz Jr. will headline a card on July 24. His opponent will be Samuel Vargas.
