Lima Dominates MacDonald, Regains Title and Wins $1 Million

Rory MacDonald managed to make it to the finals of the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix Finals. In a twist of fate, the person he beat for the title back at Bellator 192, Douglas Lima, also made it to the finals. In the end, the one who had to work his way from the bottom rose to the occasion.

Inside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, Lima was basically perfect against MacDonald in the Grand Prix Finals, winning the five-round fight via unanimous decision (49-46, 50-45, 50-45). Besides winning the finals, Lima regained the Welterweight Title for the third time while also winning $1 million from 50 Cent.

The fight took a while to heat up, as Lima and MacDonald were trying to feel each other out. The crowd was already restless until Lima hit MacDonald with a kick. Round two saw the same, except Lima utilized strong kicks reminiscent of their last bout against one another.

Besides kicks, a big theme of the night was missed opportunities. MacDonald tried several takedowns but Lima blocked off each and every one. By the fourth, MacDonald’s shots were not landing and he was getting desperate. Lima was able to land several shots in a row to the face of Rory, who could not find anything to combat him. He attempted an armbar in the fifth but Lima was able to fight out and rock him in the face.

The win ended an impressive run for Lima (32-7), who bulldozed through his side of the bracket. He submitted Andrey Koreshkov at Bellator 206, knocked out Michael Page at Bellator 221and outclassed MacDonald at Bellator 232.

As for Rory, the loss left him at 1-2-1 in his last four bouts. While not considering retirement, it is unknown what is next for the UFC veteran.

In the co-main event, Paul Daley put himself in the conversation of title contender with a TKO-win over Saad Awad. A replacement opponent, Awad tried his best to surprise everyone, but it was Daley who looked as smooth as ever.

Daley hit repetitive shots to the body and face of Awad, who attempted to utilize the takedown a few times. The second round saw Daley continuing to bully Awad, until a leg kick set up a brutal left hook that dropped him to the mat. That was Daley’s second win in a row.
