Linares on Lomachenko Rematch: ‘I Am Ready For This’
Going about six years between his third and fourth loss, Jorge Linares has managed to grow personally and professionally. The 34-year-old is looking to prove that in a potential rematch with Vasiliy Lomachenko.
A former WBC Featherweight and Super-Featherweight Champion, Linares is also a former WBC, WBA and The Ring Lightweight Champion. He lost the latter titles to Lomachenko back in May 2018, after a tenth-round TKO. While Linares scored the first knockdown of Lomachenko’s (14-1) career, the Ukrainian came back and took Linares down with a liver shot.
Speaking with VRinge, Linares (47-5) discussed the possibility of getting back in the ring with Lomachenko. He also discussed how exactly he can get that opportunity.
“Yes, maybe one day. I have a good relationship with Lomachenko. The last time I saw him was at the WBO Congress in Japan. And he also wants this fight. But now I am a little lower in the rankings, and he is on top. So I need to rise up,” Linares stated, via Boxing Scene. “And I had a terrific bout [with Morales]. Maybe in the next fight, maybe this year, maybe next year, but I am ready for this.”
Following the loss to Lomachenko, Linares rebounded with a round-three knockout of Abner Cotto. He then lost to Pablo Cesar Cano to start 2019, in an attempt to gain the WBC International Silver Super-Lightweight Championship. “The Golden Boy” then beat Al Toyogon back in September via unanimous decision. His most recent bout was a win over Carlos Morales in February, winning via knockout in his return to lightweight.
While Lomachenko has several challengers waiting to take him on, Linares is hoping he can get his chance. In their last fight, Linares suffered a cut above his eye in the eighth, which affected his ability to focus. CompuBox had Lomachenko outlanding Linares 213-207. Is there anything specific Linares will have to do next time out? What does he recall from the fight?
“I remember very well that I was in great condition for the fight against Lomachenko,” Linares went on to say. “I have had an incredible experience with him because he is the best boxer that I have ever faced, in my amateur and professional career. He is the best champion, he gave me a lot of experience. But I want a rematch, so I am training very hard. I really want to fight Lomachenko one more time. This is all about strategy. We need to develop a good strategy. It is always important in boxing.”
