Jorge Linares is confident of beating the current WBA 140-lb champion Rolando Romero.
Romero became champion after winning the vacant WBA belt against Ismael Barroso. Rolly had been scheduled to face Alberto Puello, however, the latter failed a drug test as Barroso stepped in.
However, the title fight did not go to plan initially as Barroso dropped Romero in the third round.
And as the right progressed into the ninth round, Barroso was ahead on all the cards. While that may have been the case, Romero caught Barroso which put him on the ropes.
The 40-year-old, though, was still firing back with punches, but the referee (Tony Weeks) stopped the fight, much to the grievance of the boxing community.
Many felt that Barroso had been unfairly prevented from winning the title. And as Romero looked vulnerable, especially following his sixth-round TKO loss to Gervonta Davis, Linares was adamant that the fighter was not the best he had seen.
“I think Rolly isn’t the same. His chin isn’t the same. His mentality isn’t the same,” Linares.
Linares is a former two-division champion, but at the age of 37, he is not the same fighter that he used to be. And yet, that did not prevent him from calling Rolly out.
The pair happened to be in attendance at the Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti exhibition, which is when Linares confronted the champion.
In response, Romero made it clear that he was not interested in such a fight.
“I want everyone to know this motherf***er is clout chasing right now,” Rolly
