Loeffler Claims GGG Will Have Final Say On Canelo Offer
With only a few hours until Golden Boy Promotions pulls their offer for a fight with Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin’s promoter claims his fighter will be the one to make the decision.
Oscar De La Hoya imposed a 12pm (pt) Wednesday deadline for Golovkin to agree to a 57.5-42/5 split for a September 15th rematch against Alvarez, following Golovkin opening up to taking less than a 50/50 split for a rematch of their 2017 draw.
“It’s going to be up to Gennady,” said Tom Loeffler, the head of ‘GGG Promotions, to BoxingScene.com. “He’s in Moscow right now, he’s at the opening ceremony (of the 2018 World Cup) at the invitation of Hublot and so I’m just waiting to hear back from him.”
“He made it clear before that he would come down from 50-percent to 45-percent and in order to make the deal he’d give ‘Canelo’ the A-side treatment. We’re very close, Golden Boy just came up to 42.5-percent and they made it pretty public. So Gennady is going to be the one to make the final decision just like ‘Canelo’ will on his side. So I’m just waiting on a response from Triple G.”
Loeffler claims that he’d be speaking with Golovkin on Wednesday morning to see what the middleweight superstar wants to do.
The two fought to a much disputed draw in September of 2017, and were supposed to have a rematch on May 5th of this year. Golvkin would test positive in two separate tests for the fat burning drug clenbuterol, which yielded a six month backdated suspension and in-effect postponing their rematch.
