Loma-Lopez Eyed For MSG
Teofimo Lopez will get his chance to fight one of the pound-for-pound best fighters on the planet, Vasiliy Lomachenko this Spring, and if Bob Arum gets his way it’ll be inside the World’s Most Famous Arena.
According to Arum, the battle between two of the current world lightweight champions is currently being weighed between a potential major money offer in Saudi Arabia and a fight inside Madison Square Garden.
“The Lomachenko-Lopez fight is done,” Arum, the promoter of both Lomachenko and Lopez, told BoxingScene.com. “Both guys agreed. So now, the question is where we do it and the circumstances of where we do it. We have offers from overseas. Madison Square Garden has made a big offer to do the fight. But that fight definitely will happen before the end of May.”
“It belongs in The Garden,” Arum said. “The Garden has offered to put up a substantial guarantee. But the gate guarantee is only a small part of it.”
Lomachenko has headlined inside the main portion of MSG in his career and three-times within the Garden’s Hulu Theater. Conversely, Lopez has fought inside the main Garden four times on undercards and twice inside the Hulu.
“There are a number of ways it could be done,” Arum explained of potential distribution for the battle between the WBA/WBO champion and the IBF champion. “One, if ESPN+ puts more money in, we can do it as a regular ESPN+ fight. Or ESPN+ can underwrite it, and do the pay-per-view on ESPN+, like they do with UFC. Or third, we could do it on regular pay-per-view and they would do the production. All of those are being considered.”
