Loma Stops Kambosos To Become IBF Lightweight Champion

Vasiliy Lomachenko is the new IBF Lightweight Champion after stopping George Kambosos Jr. in round 11 to win the vacant belt.

The Ukrainian looked back to his vintage best, dominating Kambosos with his superior skill set. Kambosos started attacking the body, hoping to follow Devin Haney’s blueprint to slow him down. Lomachenko was stalking his opponent, letting off flurries near the end of the first round.

Lomachenko was settled, using his jab to push Kambosos backwards. Another flurry at the end of the second got him the round. In the third, Kambosos was leaning over his right foot, trying desperately to be on the offensive. Once again, he was countered by the left. However, Kambosos did land during an exchange, but it was all Loma.

By round four, Kambosos’ face showed huge swelling. The three-weight world champion utilized his angles with superior footwork, going in and out of range to land. Kambosos’ only success came in the exchanges, but he took shots in return to land his own. By round six, Loma had outlanded his opponent by 73 to 16.

As the fight went past the halfway stage, Kambosos became more desperate. He slipped after lunging forward in round seven, missing wildly. A cut near his right eye was also pouring with blood. His nose then showed bleeding in the eighth, as the Australian knew he needed a knockout. By the tenth, Lomachenko switched his focus to the body. It worked a treat in the 11th, as a big left hurt Kambosos to the midsection.

Kambosos touched the canvas after taking a knee. While he beat the count, Loma landed two more shots to the body in another knockdown. The referee stopped the fight just as Kambosos’ corner threw in the towel. Gervonta Davis called out Loma on social media, setting up a possible unification.
