Lomachenko Boxed Kambosos Following His Father’s Advice

Vasily Lomachenko chose to face George Kambosos Jr. based on his father/trainer Anatoly’s advice.

Lomachenko took the rest of 2023 off following a controversial unanimous decision loss to Devin Haney. The majority of the boxing community felt Lomachenko had been robbed of undisputed at 135. The Ukrainian was in tears after the fight, but the rematch never happened.

Facing Kambosos gave Lomachenko a chance to right that wrong. He dominated the Australian, stopping him in round 11 to win the vacant IBF Lightweight Title. Given he is a three-division champion, his father did not want to see his son go out on a loss.

“This is a title for him because after Haney, I wanted to finish my boxing career. After this fight with Haney, I proved to myself in this sport and I don’t need to continue. But my father, every day, he sends me news, and every time, he sends highlights. I feel he wants to continue and wants a title again. He told me, ‘We need to do one more time this one. We need to fight again for title. It was a hard decision for me because I’m tired. But I love my family, I respect my father. My father built me in boxing and in life. This is title, this is a win for my father,” Lomachenko stated

There are possible unification fights against Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson. Tank holds the WBA belt and called out the Ukrainian, saying he was next if he beats Frank Martin. Shakur has been calling for the Lomachenko fight, setting up a unification since he has the WBC belt.

Loma could also box the winner of Emanuel Navarrete vs. Denys Berinchyk, who face off on May 18 for the vacant WBO belt. Lomachenko has nothing else to prove, but it’s a question of whether he can realistically become undisputed at this stage of his career.
