Lomachenko Talks Pacquiao, Kovalev-Ward
Vasyl Lomachenko may have a big fight against Nicholas Walters on the horizon, but it’s another fighter that he’s been forced to talk about this week. With Manny Pacquiao returning this weekend, fans and promoters alike have wanted to see "Hi-Tek" face off with the Filipino legend in 2017.
Over the past week, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has been talking about a dream fight between Pacquiao and Lomachenko. Manny’s trainer, Freddie Roach, would welcome the fight at 140 lbs. and said he was unimpressed by Lomachenko’s skills.
Taking to BoxingScene, Lomachenko said that he would be willing to face Pacquiao, but he is simply not a 140 lb. fighter.
"If this fight [is at] 135 weight category, I’m ready," Lomachenko said. "140? No. It’s too much, too big for me. My weight now [is only] 138."
The Ukranian fighter has been training with another high-profile fighter, Sergey Kovalev. "Krusher" is on the brink of the biggest fight of the year, as he takes on fellow top-five pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward. Lomachenko praised both athletes, and said he believes the fight will be decided by a slim margin.
"It’s a very close fight. It’s very interesting. It’s a fight of two minds, it’s a technical fight. I think this result after this fight will be a split decision.
"For Sergey Kovalev," he added with a smile.
Before any talks about a fight with Pacquiao can proceed, Lomachenko has to get past a dangerous test in Nicholas Walters on Nov. 26 in Las Vegas. Walters has been talking a fair amount of trash, but Lomachenko prefers to make his statement in the ring.
"We’ll see Nov. 26," he said. "It’s just words, it’s blah blah. I don’t like this. I like to show what I can in the ring. I like to show."
