Lomachenko to Fight Sosa in April

Ukranian phenom Vasyl Lomachenko will look to continue his ascent up the pound-for-pound list in April, and he now has his opponent. The WBO super featherweight champion will fight WBA champion Jason Sosa on April 8.

The fight will take place at the MGM National Harbor, a new casino and resort near Washington, D.C.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN that Lomachenko would likely face Sosa on the April 8 date, and Sosa confirmed with Boxing Scene that he had accepted the matchup.

“We were more than happy to take the fight against Lomachenko,” Sosa said. “We’re very excited. We feel that we’re ready to fight Lomachenko. We’ve been asking to fight Lomachenko. The price just had to be right. But we’re excited to show the world what we can do with one of the so-called best fighters in the world.”

Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) has been bewildering opponents on his way to winning titles in two weight classes in under ten professional fights. He put on two masterclass performances in 2016, knocking out Rocky Martinez in July and then schooling Walters to the point that the undefeated power puncher quit on the stool.

Sosa (20-1-4, 15 KOs) last beat English boxer Stephen Smith in November as a defense of his WBA belt. He and Lomachenko have a common opponent in Nicholas Walters; where Lomachenko stopped the Jamaican fighter, Sosa fought Walters to a draw in a fight that most believed Walters should have won.
