In a shocking upset tonight at UFC Mexico City, Lone’er Kavanagh defiantly overcame Brandon Moreno, earning a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards.
Not only was Kavanagh expected to not find victory in this fight given the massive rankings difference, with him at No. 30 and Moreno at No. 6 coming into this fight, he also agreed to the bout on short notice, making things even more impressive.
This was a massive bounce-back performance for Kavanagh, as he suffered a rough knockout loss to Charles Johnson last August. Meanwhile, Moreno added a 10th loss to his record, his second straight after falling to Tatsuro Taira last December.
The turning point in the fight came in the second round with Kavanagh scoring with a set of powerful punches, led by a straight right. The strikes that followed rocked Moreno, and the fans in Mexico City thought for a moment they could be looking at a finish in the main event. Luckily for Moreno, he survived the onslaught, but was unable to make a meaningful enough comeback in the later rounds to secure the decision.
