Lopez Defeats Vazquez, Brawl After Bout
In a grudge match of former world champions, Juan Manuel Lopez (35-5, 32 KOs) defeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (24-7-1, 19 KOs) via 11th round stoppage.
But it was after the fight that had more people talking. Following the stoppage, which Vazquez and his corner were not pleased about, a brawl broke out among the cornermen, with several people throwing punches and the crowd throwing debris into the ring.
Vazquez started the bout by focusing on his jab, staying patient though quicker and sharper with his punches. In the second, Lopez simply focused on getting off any punches he could, though Vazquez got in better shots again.
Vazquez kept himself a good distance away from Lopez in the third. The next round, Vazquez could be heard openly trash-talking Lopez, and the two started swinging away so often that a warning was issued to both corners. Vazquez was rocked in the fifth but recovered. In the sixth, Lopez continued his hard hitting.
Vazquez, however, rocked Lopez in the seventh, looking to earn a stoppage victory. The two exchanged shots again in the eighth, but it was clear Vazquez was having an issue with his right eye.
Lopez took advantage, dominating the ninth round and getting very accurate shots in the 10th. When the 11th round came, Lopez needed just one strong right to rock Vazquez, putting him against the ropes. Lopez then landed shot after shot until the ref waved off the fight, which then started the ensuing brawl until order was restored.
