Lopez Vs. Gonzalez IBF Title Clash: Gonzalez Makes Weight On Second Attempt

Luis Alberto Lopez is set to defend his IBF featherweight title against Joet Gonzalez on September 15th, 2023.

Lopez will face Gonzalez live from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, after having grabbed the belt from Josh Warrington in 2021. Thereafter, his first defense followed against Michael Conlan as he stopped the latter via a fifth-round knockout. And now standing in his way is Gonzalez. The former has fallen short at world level, which was shown when he faced Shakur Stevenson in 2019. In a fight where the WBO featherweight title was up for grabs, Gonzalez lost via a unanimous decision. So, this time around, there is plenty on the line.

Gonzalez’s preparation for the fight, though, was not the best. During the weigh-in, the boxer had to make weight on his second attempt. He had initially come in over the limit at 126.4 pounds. However, at the second attempt of trying, Gonzalez hit the limit of 126 pounds exactly. This was crucial as, otherwise, the fight would have gone ahead without Gonzalez having the right to fight for the belt. As for Lopez, he made the weight comfortably at 125.2 pounds.
