Luis Ortiz to Face Derrick Rossy on April 22
After recently signing with promoter Al Haymon, heavyweight contender Luis "King Kong" Ortiz is now set to fight on April 22 on the undercard of Shawn Porter vs. Andre Berto. Ortiz will fight journeyman Derric Rossy, another opponent that is thought to be several steps below Ortiz’s level.
Ring TV confirmed that Ortiz would fight on April 22, and on Thursday promoter Lou DiBella officially announced that Rossy would be the opponent.
Ortiz (27-0, 23 KOs) defeated Tony Thompson, Malik Scott and Dave Allen in his three 2016 appearances. His fight with Allen was criticized as a mismatch, given Ortiz’s lofty goals of challenging the top heavyweights of the division.
Rossy (31-12, 15 KOs) isn’t exactly the step up that fans were hoping for. He is 3-7 in his last ten fights, one of those being a knockout loss to Audley Harrison in 2013.
The event will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and will also feature a WBC super welterweight title fight between Jermell Charlo and Charles Hatley.
