MacDonald-Fitch Winner Could Compete At Bellator 222
Although Rory MacDonald and Jon Fitch are busy preparing for their upcoming title fight inside the Bellator welterweight Grand Prix, the winner could potentially have his next fight already set.
MacDonald and Fitch will fight for the Bellator welterweight title at Bellator 220 on April 27 in a quarterfinal fight at the Grand Prix. The winner will face Neiman Gracie in a semifinal bout at Bellator 222. If the winner of MacDonald vs. Fitch isn’t healthy enough to advance, alternate Lorenz Larkin could enter the tournament.
MacDonald has held the welterweight title since January 2018, but has yet to defend it. After MacDonald won the title, he moved up in weight to challenge for the Bellator middleweight title, but was stopped by Gegard Mousasi in the second round of their fight.
Fitch has won his last five fights across three different promotions. Fitch, a former PFL and WSOF welterweight champion, made his Bellator debut at Bellator 199 in May 2018.
The fight at Bellator 220 would be the last in the quarterfinal round as the other semifinal fight, Douglas Lima vs. Michael Page, is set for May 11. The winner of the Grand Prix not only walks away with the Bellator welterweight title, but also wins a $1 million prize.
Bellator 222 was recently announced and set to take place at Madison Square Garden on June 14. Announced for Bellator 222 is a light heavyweight bout between Chael Sonnen and Lyoto Machida in what will be Machida’s second fight since signing with the promotion in 2018.
