Mairis Briedis Vs. Jai Opetaia Delayed A Second Time
The world title fight between Mairis Briedis and Jai Opetaia has been postponed for the second time.
Opetaia has suffered a rib injury from training, pushing the fight back until either June or July, sources said. The championship bout was supposed to take place on May 11 in Australia.
Briedis was originally scheduled to take on mandatory challenger Opetaia on April 6, but it was postponed after the Latvian tested positive for Covid-19.
Briedis is coming off a successful defense of his IBF world cruiserweight title after technically knocking out Artur Mann in October.
Opetaia won a bronze medal at the 2012 Youth World Championship and has represented Australia at the 2012 Olympics and 2014 Commonwealth Games before turning pro in 2015. This could be one of his toughest challenges yet.
A new date is expected to be announced soon.
