Islam Makhachev (28-1) has the chance to make UFC history when he defends his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry (17-1) at UFC 330 on August 15.
Makhachev enters the fight riding a 16-fight UFC winning streak, tying Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history.
Silva set the record with 16 consecutive victories before his run ended in 2013.
A victory over Garry would give Makhachev 17 straight UFC wins and move him ahead of Silva for sole possession of the all-time record.
Makhachev tied Silva’s mark when he defeated Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision at UFC 322 to win the welterweight title and become a two-division UFC champion.
The former lightweight champion will now make his first defense of the 170-pound belt against Garry, who enters UFC 330 on a three-fight winning streak.
A win would not only keep Makhachev at the top of the welterweight division, but also give him a place in the UFC record books that no fighter has previously held.
