Makhachev Dismisses A Chandler Fight

Islam Makhachev has shut down talks of a fight with Michael Chandler.

Makhachev is coming off a successful defense of his UFC Lightweight Title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 301. He secured a fifth-round submission win to beat a defiant Poirier. He has been linked with a fight against Arman Tsarukyan next. Tsarukyan is next in line for a title shot.

However, he has just been given a nine-month ban for punching a fan at UFC 300 as he made his way into the arena for his fight. Poirier has suggested a rematch if Islam cannot find an opponent. However, Chandler claimed he was offered the fight following Conor McGregor’s withdrawal. Matt Brown has called on Chandler to take the fight as he cannot afford to pass up a title shot. Chandler is 38 and has wasted plenty of time waiting for McGregor. Chandler has not fought since his defeat to Poirier at UFC 281 in 2022.

“Why you wouldn’t jump on that, take it right now, sign the dotted line today, makes zero sense to me. I can’t think of any reason not to do it. Assuming Conor does come back – let’s just assume he is going to come back – do you think he wouldn’t love to fight you for the title?

“You could absolutely set that fight for the title, assuming that you win the title and now not only is it a Conor McGregor fight but it’s a Conor McGregor fight for the title. Does it get any better? Michael Chandler needed Conor. Now he’s got a title shot. Now he doesn’t need Conor. Get the…title shot. [Forget] Conor. Go,” Brown said

Despite this being the case, Islam is not keen on taking the fight.
