Makhachev Ready For Poirier Following Intense Training With Khabib

Khabib Nurmagomedov has gotten Islam Makhachev in peak shape ahead of the UFC Lightweight Champion’s fight with Dustin Poirier.

Makhachev takes on Poirier on June 1 at UFC 302. This will be the third of defense of his title having beaten Alexander Volkanovski in consecutive fights. A third successful defense will tie Makhachev to Khabib’s record. To get him ready, Khabib joined Islam’s training camp. Based on Islam’s words, the training has gone down well.

“Khabib came to the camp, slightly disrupting the start, and without any acclimatization, we immediately began training”, Makhachev said

Poirier, however, wants to win a UFC title for his family before he retires from the sport. He has lost out on titles on three occasions. Losses to Khabib for the lightweight title at UFC 242 in 2019 and Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in 2021 were tough to take.

Poirier suffered submission losses in both of those bouts. Dustin also came up short at UFC 291, losing to Justin Gaethje, who became the BMF Champion. Dustin did stop Benoit St Denis in his last fight to give him the title shot. Now, he wants to win a belt for for his family.

“I’m also a realist, I’m 35, how many more times would I have to put myself in position again? It’s safe to say this is my last shot at becoming the champion of the world. This is a chance to say I did it, I did what I said I was going to do when I was 18 years old. It’s a personal thing, it’s not for the fans, it’s not for the Hall of Fame, it’s for me and my wife to hug and say you really did it you crazy motherf****r. All the ups and down of the last 17 years, all the lessons I’ve learned, at UFC 302, I’m going to knock Islam Makhachev out and become the world champion,” Poirier said
