UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev (28-1) wasted no time poking fun at Ilia Topuria (17-1) after watching the former lightweight champion lose his belt to Justin Gaethje (28-5) at UFC Freedom 250 last weekend.
The pair had been in talks to face each other on the White House card before negotiations collapsed, with each side blaming the other — Topuria claiming Makhachev pulled out, Makhachev accusing Topuria of demanding too much money. With Topuria’s corner stopping the fight before the fifth round, Makhachev had the last word.
“He who exalts himself will be humbled. There are levels in this game! Congratulations Justin, you deserve this belt more than anyone,” Makhachev
Islam later returned with a second post, this time taking direct aim at the manner of the defeat.
“To quit in the biggest fight of your career — is something not everybody can do. Real Le Layenda,” Makhachev
