Manager Details What Went Wrong For Paulo Costa Against Israel Adesanya
Paulo Costa’s manager has a theory on why his fighter became overwhelmed against Israel Adesanya.
Adesanya put his UFC Middleweight Championship on the line against Costa in the main event of UFC 253 on September 26. Costa was never able to get going as the kicks of Adesanya were doing a number on him. Adesanya ended up connected with a head kick that split Costa open. He then dropped “Borrachinha” with a left hand and finished him with ground-and-pound.
Costa’s manager, Wallid Ismail, spoke to Ag Fight following UFC 253. Ismail gave his take on why things didn’t work out for Costa.
“When Adesanya started kicking him in the calf, he was supposed to have changed his strategy. The strategy was to keep the first two rounds and go all out for the rest of the fight to try to knock out. It was supposed to have changed the strategy in the third minute of the first round. Or put him down, beat him, but do something, because he wouldn’t be able to take that amount of kick in the calf. He only endured it because it is very thick-skinned. There was a very big tactical error.”
This is the first loss in Costa’s pro MMA career. Costa had a record of 13-0 going into the bout with “The Last Stylebender.” Adesanya’s record improved to 20-0 with the victory over Costa. The 185-pound champion also scored his 15th win by way of knockout or TKO.
Costa has called for a rematch with Adesanya. Despite the one-sided affair, “Borrachinha” insists something happened before the fight that ended up hindering his performance. Costa also said he wants to make Adesanya pay for his post-fight antics.
