Manny Pacquiao In Line For A Shock Return Against Mario Barrios

Manny Pacquiao could return to fight Mario Barrios for the WBC Welterweight Belt at the age of 45.

Pacman retired following his loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021. He has had one exhibition during that period with a win over DK Yoo. Fights with Conor Benn, Conor McGregor and a Floyd Mayweather rematch have been mentioned. However, nothing has materialized, leaving the door open for a fight with Barrios. The fight is being planned for September at either the MGM Grand or the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Barrios is the WBC Interim Welterweight Champion, a belt he acquired after beating Ugas. He defended it with a victory over Fabian Maidana in his last fight. Barrios could become the full WBC Champion after Terence Crawford became the ‘Champion in Recess.’ Bud will fight Israil Madrimov on August 3 at junior middleweight.

Crawford hopes to become a four-division champion by grabbing the Russian’s belt. That scenario has presented Manny with a chance of a comeback at 45. The chairman of his promotional company, Manny Pacquiao Promotions, Sean Gibbons, has previously hinted at a Manny return.

“Manny Pacquiao is still chasing history. He is looking at one more big fight in 2024. Manny made history at 40 years old when he beat Keith Thurman to win the WBA 147-pound world title. He became the oldest fighter ever to do it. He would love a shot at the welterweight title before calling it a career,” Sean Gibbons said
