Manny Pacquiao Leaning Towards Mikey Garcia Over Terence Crawford
Manny Pacquiao isn’t ruling out Terence Crawford but it’s looking like Mikey Garcia is the frontrunner for his next opponent.
Pacquiao hasn’t competed since July 2019. He captured the WBA (Super) Welterweight gold from Keith Thurman via split decision. Pacquiao has since been designated to “Champion in Recess” due to his inactivity.
Garcia recently turned some heads when he claimed that the negotiation process with Pacquiao is reaching the finalization stage. Here’s what he told Jo Ankier.
“We’re finalizing all of the details. We hope to get the exact date and location in the next few days. We’re trying to get everything done for May.
“It’s been in the works for a long time, particularly more in detail in the last year. Now, in the last few weeks, we’ve been getting very close to working on this and finalizing it. I’m pretty excited. We’ll have all of the details set in the next few days. It’s a matter of time. So far, it seems like all of the parties are on board. I’m excited for it.”
Speaking to ABS-CBN, Pacquiao revealed that Garcia is ahead of Crawford in terms of his next opponent (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“We’re leaning towards Mikey Garcia, but we’re also talking to Crawford. It depends on who I get to face, what’s important is I’m ready. We never really got complacent, we’ve always continuously worked out. We keep on playing basketball aside from boxing. Actually, right after my fight the last time with [Keith] Thurman, I didn’t work out boxing, but I kept playing basketball.”
Garcia rebounded after suffering his first career loss to Errol Spence Jr. by defeating Jessie Vargas via unanimous decision. Garcia has long expressed his desire to share the ring with Pacquiao.
As for Crawford, he’s also admitted that if he can’t get the Spence fight, then a showdown with Pacquiao would be more than welcome. If Pacquiao ultimately does fight Garcia, Crawford will likely turn his attention to Shawn Porter.
