Manny Pacquiao’s next fight could be on tap if Mikey Garcia is to be believed.
It’s no secret that Garcia has been calling for a showdown with “PacMan”. For over a year, Garcia has expressed his desire to fight Pacquiao. Garcia has said that a bout with “living legend” Pacquiao would enhance his legacy.
It appears Garcia will finally be getting his wish. During a chat with journalist Jo Ankier, the former three-division champion claimed that a deal to share the ring with Pacquiao is close to being finalized (via BoxingScene.com).
“We’re finalizing all of the details. We hope to get the exact date and location in the next few days. We’re trying to get everything done for May.
“It’s been in the works for a long time, particularly more in detail in the last year. Now, in the last few weeks, we’ve been getting very close to working on this and finalizing it. I’m pretty excited. We’ll have all of the details set in the next few days. It’s a matter of time. So far, it seems like all of the parties are on board. I’m excited for it.”
Pacquiao last competed back in July 2019. He defeated Keith Thurman via unanimous decision to become the WBA (Super) Welterweight Champion. Due to inactivity, the WBA changed Pacquiao’s title status to “Champion in Recess.”
As for Garcia, his most recent outing took place back in February 2020. He rebounded from his one-sided loss to Errol Spence Jr. by defeating Jessie Vargas via unanimous decision.
