Mares Out, Davis Needs New Opponent

Gervonta Davis’ first fight in nearly a year has seen a complication, as Abner Mares has pulled out of their February 9th fight.

Initially reported by Boxing Scene, Mares has suffered an undisclosed injury during training camp for their showdown at Dignity Health Sports Park for a card set for Showtime.

The card has yet to be cancelled due to the card being near a sell out for Davis first fight since April 21st, as-well as 15 other fights set for the February 9th show in Carson, California.

This was set to be Davis’ first defense of the WBA “super” super middleweight  title he won back in April, when he decimated Jesus Cuellar in three rounds.

On the card are lightweights Sharif Bogere and Javier Fortuna, as well as a junior welterweight fight between Mario Barrios and Richarc Zamora.

Bogere or Fortuna could possibly take the fight against Davis, but they’d need to be at 130 pounds, which is the contracted weight of Davis-Mares.
