Mario Barrios’ Trainer Says Boots Ennis Backed Out Of A Fight

Jaron Ennis avoided a fight with Mario Barrios.

That is according to Barrios’ trainer, Bob Santos. Barrios had his best career win, beating Yordenis Ugas for the WBC Interim Welterweight Title. Barrios is now mandatory for Crawford’s WBC, WBA and WBO belts. If Crawford vacates and moves up to junior middleweight, Barrios becomes the full WBC champion.

Ennis is the current IBF Welterweight Champion. He was elevated from his IBF mandatory status after Crawford chose to face Errol Spence Jr. instead, even if the rematch broke down. That set up a potential Barrios fight with Ennis for an IBF title defense. Barrios’ trainer claims terms were verbally agreed, but Ennis backed out.

“We agreed to fight him. They said, ‘Would you fight Boots? Nobody wants to fight Boots.’ I said, ‘We’ll fight Boots.’ I told everybody that. He went with DAZN now, but we’re with Al Haymon, and I know he’ll let us fight anybody, anytime, anywhere. Maybe that’s something that can be put together sometime with Boots. But obviously, he took off with DAZN for whatever reason, so we’ll see. Boots, Crawford, any of those guys. We agreed to fight him [Boots Ennis]. They approached us and said, ‘Would you be willing to fight him?’ I told everybody, ‘Of course, we’ll fight him.’ Why wouldn’t we fight him?,” Santos said

Boots has signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing, making the Barrios fight unlikely. Barrios is with PBC. The promotional outfit prefers keeping their fights in-house. PBC does not have the best relationship with DAZN, only choosing to work with them for the biggest fights. The Davis-Garcia and Canelo-Munguia fights have shown that. An Ennis-Barrios fight is not the biggest, with Boots’ focus on Crawford.

“He [Crawford] said a few times he’s not looking my way; I’m not a big enough name. But there’s nobody else left for him to fight. Either you fight me, or you fight nobody,” Ennis stated
