Martin Murray Feels Billy Joe Saunders Has Never Fought Someone Like Him

Martin Murray believes he will pose a unique challenge to Billy Joe Saunders.

Murray is set to challenge Saunders on December 4 for the WBO Super-Middleweight Title. The championship tilt will headline a Matchroom Boxing card. Murray is no stranger to title fights but outside of an interim WBA Middleweight Championship win, he hasn’t won the big one.

Ahead of his clash with Saunders, Murray expressed his belief that Saunders will be in for a surprise when the bell rings (h/t BoxingScene.com).

“A couple of months ago I thought it was time,” Murray said. “COVID has ruined a lot of people’s lives and I thought it had ruined my career. And I thought I might call it a day. When is boxing going to start? I’ve been on some lonely places at times, but I’ve always believed in myself. Hope has always been here. I thought it would finish my career, but it will end up making it.

“I know I am in for a hard fight but I don’t think he has fought anyone like me, he hasn’t fought the opposition I have fought and I always felt I could beat them. But in the same breath, it’s a hard fight, I like challenge, I’ve always wanted to test myself against the best. He’s one of the best, he’s a world champion. But I’m ready for it and I do think I can win.”

At the age of 38, time appears to be running out for Murray’s world title aspirations. He has proven that he isn’t an easy out for anyone. Murray has only been beaten via TKO by Gennady Golovkin. His other losses were via decision. He’s hoping to finally shatter the glass ceiling before it’s too late.
