Martinez Aiming For Comeback, Hopes For Chavez Jr. Rematch

It’s been years since boxing has seen Sergio Martinez in action, but the Argentine former world champion is preparing for a comeback.

According to Martinez, he is looking to make a comeback after not fighting since the summer of 2014 when he was stopped by Miguel Cotto, a fight that saw Martinez get knocked down three times in the first round alone. Martinez said he would only think about a comeback if he gets a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or another big name like Floyd Mayweather.

“It is OK that Julio Cesar Chavez wants to fight me again as I would only come back to face him or another big name of my generation like Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao. For me, this is a big challenge and I love challenges. I am training since months ago and I am not joking about this. If he really wants it we can do it,” Martinez said.

Chavez Jr. has not fought since losing to Canelo Alvarez back in 2017. He recently claimed on Twitter that he has a fight against Sergio Mora and then hoped to have the rematch against Martinez, whom said he was happy to oblige. Martinez even suggested a potential fight between him and Chavez Jr. for November.

Martinez and Chavez Jr. fought back in 2012 when Chavez Jr. was the WBC middleweight champion. Martinez defeated Chavez Jr. to win the title by a wide unanimous decision, but not before Chavez Jr. knocked Martinez down in the 12th round and nearly stopped him.
