Martiosyan & Sulecki Signed For WBC Eliminator
The World Boxing Council has ordered a final junior middleweight eliminator between Vanes Martirosyan and Maciej Sulecki.
The winner will be in line for a mandatory shots at current WBC world champion Jermell Charlo. Sulecki is ranked at number 1, while Vanes is sitting at number 2.
“Jermell Charlo made two mandatory defenses successfully. A final elimination bout has been ordered between Vanes Martirosyan and Maciej Sulecki,” said WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.
Vanes’ career has been all over the place in recent years and it’s kind of odd that he’s ranked at number 2 by the WBC, since the boxer has been inactive since May of 2016 and suffered a defeat in that contest.
Vanes already went up against Charlo in 2015, and lost a close ten round decision in Las Vegas. Vanes return to the Nevada city in September and scored two knockdowns on route to winning a ten round decision over former world champion Ishe Smith.
The following year, which was Vanes’ last appearance in the ring, he secured a rematch with WBA, IBO world champion Erislandy Lara, who boxed his way to a twelve round unanimous decision in a contest that also took place in Las Vegas.
After parting way with Top Rank and hooking up with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, Vanes took to social media to express his unhappiness with Haymon – for failing to keep him active.
Vanes would go on to part ways with Haymon and signed a promotional contract with Don King, but has yet to fight again.
Sulecki has been very active, with two fights in 2016 and three in 2017. He secured several wins of not during that period, including a knockout of Hugo Centeno – who is now negotiating a fight at middleweight with Jermall Charlo – and a recent decision win over top Germany contender Jack Culcay.
Charlo may not have to fight the winner for some time, after making back to back mandatory defenses against Charles Hatley and Eriskson Lubin.
