Marvin Hagler Batters Juan Roldan To Retain Titles – March 30, 1984 (This Day In Boxing History)
In the early 1980s, Marvelous Marvin Hagler was the man to beat.
Unfortunately for Juan Roldan on March 30, 1984, he was unable to achieve that. Hagler retained his undisputed 160-pound championships for the ninth time with a 10th round stoppage of Roldan.
Seconds into the first round, Roldan caught Hagler with a left hook on the back of the head, which referee Tony Perez ruled a knockdown.
Though Hagler said he slipped, it was counted as the only official knockdown of his career.
In the 10th round, Hagler got revenge by knocking Roldan down. Roldan, whose eye was swollen shut, got up at the count of seven, but told the referee he did not want to continue.
