Masvidal Calls Out Thompson, Wonderboy Responds
Since his close loss to Demian Maia, welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal is looking to get back into the cage quickly and prove his status as one of the division’s most dangerous fighters. “Gamebred” took to social media this week to call out the #1 contender in the division, Stephen Thompson.
After claiming that Neil Magny turned down a fight with him for the summer, Masvidal took a shot at “Wonderboy”:
Just got word @NeilMagny is suffering from vaginitis. @WonderboyMMA where you at? #EasyMoney

@jasontreumanpro @NeilMagny @WonderboyMMA I’ll light his ass up

Thompson responded to Masvidal shortly thereafter, unsurprisingly not engaging in trash talk but confirming that he was willing to fight Masvidal once he finished recovering from a knee injury.
@GamebredFighter @jasontreumanpro @NeilMagny Hey man would love to fight you after I heal up from knee surgery my friend

In Thompson’s last two fights he was unable to capture the welterweight title from champion Tyron Woodley. At UFC 205 in November, Thompson and Woodley fought to a draw. Then in March, Thompson got a second crack at the champion, losing by majority decision. The fight was controversial with many believing Thompson won, but it was also a five-round slow-paced slog that hurt the reputation of both combatants.
A fight against Masvidal gives Thompson the opportunity to engage in another exciting standup fight to redeem himself after disappointing in the Woodley fights.
