Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith shut down rumors of a summer rematch between Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) and Dillian Whyte (31-4, 21 KOs).
The talk surrounding a Whyte rematch intensified after Joshua shared social media footage of his return to training at Oleksandr Usyk’s base in Spain, working under the guidance of Iegor Golub. However, Matchroom’s focus remains firmly on Joshua’s recovery following a tough period. Joshua suffered a fatal car accident in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 29, 2025, which claimed the lives of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Although Matchroom is targeting a July or August 2026 return to regain sharpness, the promotion is avoiding any “risky” fights until Joshua is fully back in rhythm. Smith cast doubt on any Whyte fight for now.
“Not really. I mean, I don’t believe so. Anything can happen in boxing, but I don’t believe so. It would be great to get him back out in the summer. But he’s back in full training now. He’s got to be right, he’s got to be prepared and ready,” Smith said
