Matt Hughes Considering Comeback

One of the most popular trailblazers in the history of the UFC is considering a return to MMA.

Matt Hughes, former welterweight champion and one of the sport’s biggest stars in the early days of the Zuffa era, was a guest on Joe Buck’s "Undeniable with Joe Buck" program for an episode that will air later this year. A clip from that episode was released, however, and in it Hughes reveals that he may not be done fighting.

“If I could find an opponent that I could beat, I would go again,” Hughes said.

"I might even be talking to an organization about that," he continued. He went on to confirm that he was "in talks" about a comeback, but did not reveal what organization he was speaking to.

The most revealing bit of the clip came when Buck asked Hughes who he would hypothetically be fighting, and Hughes said that his opponent could perhaps be someone that has been a guest on Buck’s show in the past. That leaves few options, and MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani’s sources say that he is indeed talking about Royce Gracie.

Hughes beat Gracie back at UFC 60 in May 2006. Gracie has been competing in Bellator, meaning that the Scott Coker-led promotion is the one Hughes has been in touch with.

The former welterweight champ Hughes retired in 2013, having suffered two straight knockout losses to B.J. Penn and Josh Koscheck. He is 43 years old.
