Matt Hughes Finishes BJ Penn In Rematch For Title – September 23, 2006 (This Day In MMA History)

Fifteen years ago, Matt Hughes earned one of the greatest victories in his career.

Hughes (45-9) finished BJ Penn (16-14-2) via KO/TKO in a rematch for the title at UFC 63 in the main event.

Hughes went on to become a nine-time UFC welterweight champion while Penn became a titleholder in both lightweight and welterweight divisions.

Both fighters were once considered the No. 1 pound-for-pound mixed martial artists in the world.

Hughes was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2010 and Penn was inducted five years later. Penn is often regarded as one of the greatest fighters in the sport.
