Mayweather Advises Young Fighters Not To Chase After Pacquiao

A theme in today’s boxing scene is for fighters to call out Manny Pacquaio to face them. The current WBA Welterweight Champion has had a busy few years following a 2015 loss at the hands of Floyd Mayweather. When it comes to Pacquaio competing, Mayweather believes he should be calling the shots.

Speaking with Fight Hype, Mayweather (50-0) talked about how it should be Pacquaio (62-7-2) who should be the dealer in this situation. The younger fighters shouldn’t want to face a man of his nature, but build themselves up naturally.

“It’s sad that you hear guys say, ‘I want to fight Manny Pacquiao.’ But Manny Pacquiao is 41 now. Don’t chase him,” Mayweather stated, via The Sun. “You young guys chase each other. Stop chasing this old man. If the opportunity presents itself, go out and do what you got to do.”

An eight-division champion, Pacquiao lost the WBO Welterweight Title to Mayweather. Injured before the fight. Pacquaio made it interesting but lost via unanimous decision. He then won two in a row by beating Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas, the latter fight regaining the WBO Title. The Senator then lost the belt via controversial fashion to Jeff Horn.

Since then he is 3-0, beating Lucas Matthysse, Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman. In the last fight, he won WBA gold. Since then, fights have been requested by WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford and Danny Garcia, with Thurman even asking for a rematch. Pacquaio, on the other hand, hasn’t picked an opponent to face yet, although he has shown interest in fighting Mayweather again.

Now retired, Mayweather believes Pacquaio, who has had issues when it comes to taxes, should invest in something and wait until he is ready to fight.

“Let Manny Pacquiao pick and choose who he wants to fight,” Mayweather went on to say. “With everything he’s accomplished, hopefully, he’s made some smart investments.”
