Mayweather Criticizes Pacquiao For Rematch Announcement

Floyd Mayweather has hit out at Manny Pacquiao after he announced a rematch.

Pacman and Mayweather fought in the ‘Fight of the Century’ in 2015, and Floyd won a comfortable unanimous decision. A rematch had been discussed after Pacman blamed a shoulder injury for his below-par performance. Both fighters would retire without having a rematch.

Mayweather has not fought professionally since beating Conor McGregor in 2017, while Pacquiao’s last pro fight was a loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021. Since then, Pacman has had an exhibition with DK Yoo and scheduled another fight for April against Buakaw Banchamek. But that was overshadowed by his announcement at a RIZN event in December when he confirmed a Mayweather rematch.

“Fight against Floyd Mayweather next year?” Rizin CEO’s Nobuyuki Sakakibara said

“Yeah, thank you so much for inviting me here again. I’m sorry for the last time that we promised that we’re going to fight this year. Next year I’m going to see you in Japan, again big fight against- Floyd Mayweather. Floyd Mayweather, yeah. I thought that you didn’t want me to say that. But I am excited about that. Thank you for always supporting Rizin and Sakakibara,” Manny replied

Mayweather stayed silent, leaving boxing fans none the wiser. It may have been done to test whether a rematch could still sell. Now that some time has passed, Mayweather had a dig at his fellow boxer for using his name.

“Manny Pacquiao spoke about that, and he shouldn’t have. Because there’s a time and a place for everything. I’m not going to say he’s right [about the fight happening] or he’s wrong. I don’t have to say anything. Just by you saying my name, they gave me a check for four million. I don’t like to throw certain individuals under the bus, because we don’t do that.

“[But], he said my name when he wasn’t supposed to. Remember, I said there’s a time and a place. Remember, I want you guys to go check out Manny Pacquiao. When he got upset a few times, he said ‘Oh Floyd, you’re using my name, you’re using my name’, he got famous because they said this could be the guy that could possibly dethrone the king. Did it happen? Absolutely not. Was he easy? Absolutely,” Mayweather stated
