Mayweather Tells Crawford And Benavidez To Fight; Winner Gets Canelo

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has called on Terence Crawford and David Benavidez to fight each other to earn the right to face Canelo Alvarez.

Crawford and Benavidez have both been linked with facing Alvarez. Bud targeted the Mexican’s Undisputed Super Middleweight Title after stopping Errol Spence Jr. A win over Canelo would make Crawford undisputed in a third weight class. Canelo responded to the Crawford rumors by ruling the fight out, stating he would get no credit for beating a smaller man.

Benavidez has been linked with Canelo once he became the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion. The mandatory is expected to be called in March, but Canelo looks no closer to fighting the Mexican Monster. Benavidez could move up to light heavyweight to take on Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim Lightweight Title.

A win places Benavidez as mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol, who fight for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship on June 1. Mayweather suggested Crawford and Benavidez would put themselves in a stronger position to face Canelo if they squared off.

“He wants to go to 168 and he wants to fight Canelo and Benavidez wants to fight Canelo bad. If they can’t get Canelo, they can fight each other, Benavidez and Crawford. Both of you guys are chasing one fighter [Canelo], and both of y’all can’t get that fighter, then both of you should say, ‘We’ll fight each other.

“I just threw that out there because you told me about Benavidez trying to fight Canelo, and I know that Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford has been trying to fight Canelo. Both of them have been trying to get that fight done. It seems like they’ve both been trying to get it done extremely bad. If they can’t get it done, then you guys fight. Say, ‘F*** it,” Mayweather said

That fight is unlikely to happen. Canelo is arguably too big for Crawford, making Benavidez even tougher since he is considering a move up to 175. But Mayweather also backed a Crawford fight with Jaron Ennis, the IBF Welterweight Champion. Ennis was elevated to a full champion after Crawford was stripped for not defending his Undisputed Welterweight Title against him. But that fight could play out.

“Somebody’s got to give ‘Boots’ the opportunity. It’s been difficult for Terence Crawford to get the Spence rematch done, it’s been difficult to get the Canelo fight done, so his other option is to fight ‘Boots’ Ennis,” Mayweather added
