With almost three weeks remaining till Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor face off in Las Vegas for one of the most publicized fights of all time, some of the finer details have not been ironed out, mainly the gloves each fighter will be using.
Yesterday evening on his Instagram page, Mayweather sent out a message to not only McGregor, but the promoters of the fight wanting 8oz gloves for their fight on August 26th.
“Don’t believe what you hear in the media. Don’t believe what you hear on blog sites. If it’s not coming directly from me, then it’s not true. I’m telling McGregor, “Let’s fight in 8 oz gloves”. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I’ll be wearing 8 oz Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate. Let’s give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.
@grantworldwide
@mayweatherpromotions”
This drastic change comes after McGregor called out Mayweather during their Los Angeles press conference for restricting the gloves by fighting at the junior middleweight limit of 154 pound, which mandates a 10 oz glove. The heavier gloves potentially limiting McGregor’s punching power, but there is something else standing in the way.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission rules yesterday that the gloves for the fight between the MMA star and undefeated boxer will remain with 10 oz gloves and not 8 oz gloves. When asked about this Athletic Commission representative Bob Bennett cited health concerns, claiming…
“These regulations are in place for the health and safety of the athletes, which is of the utmost importance to the commission. Our regulations already outline the appropriate glove size according to contracted weight of a fight.”
In an update on his Instagram page Conor McGregor responded to Mayweather’s glove request.
Another handy 12 rounds today. We are prepared to destroy Floyd. Pick whatever size gloves you want as well little man. I fight with 4oz. I don’t give a fuck about the size of the glove. I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands.
