This would be a huge fight for both men. McGregor (22-4) is coming off of a TKO-win against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. It was his first win in the UFC since 2016, when he beat Eddie Alvarez in New York for the UFC Lightweight Championship. He has since fought Floyd Mayweather and lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 in dominant fashion. He has since been linked to Nate Diaz, Jorge Masvidal and Gaethje.
On a three-fight win streak, Gaethje (21-2) is also coming off of a TKO-win against Donald Cerrone back in September. All three of those wins have been via knockout.
The fight would mean that Gaethje was able to work things out with Dana White, who stated the 31-year-old needed to be on the same page as him. It was reported that Gaethje was offered a fight with McGregor before but rejected it.
“Look what Conor has done over the last, however many years,” White said. “And then he loses to Khabib in a fight that was…we’ve talked about bad blood, try next-level bad blood. Gaethje was on his way up, too; we’ve offered Gaethje a lot of fights that Gaethje hasn’t taken.”
The UFC has not confirmed the news, and there has been no word from either camps as of this moment.
