McGregor May Have Gotten New Contract Before Arrest

This week saw Conor McGregor make a surprise entrance into the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and attack a bus filled with several UFC fighters, including rival Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor would turn himself in, and he now faces 12 charges with his next court date in June.

According to MMA Fighting, things could have turned out quite different for the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion. McGregor and the UFC were reportedly in negotiations for a new contract. UFC President Dana White confirmed the negotiations to ESPN.

While there were reportedly some obstacles still needed to be cleared, the UFC was confident in getting a new deal and announcing McGregor’s return at the 25th-anniversary press conference. There was even an idea, following the injury to Tony Ferguson, to remove Nurmagomedov from the card and book him vs. McGregor later this year. However, that idea would not have come to fruition regardless.

There was also an idea of booking McGregor against Rafael dos Anjos in an interim welterweight title fight.
