Political figures and celebrities have helped spread the word that staying safe and social distancing can help end the massive spread of the coronavirus. Athletes are hoping their platform can help as well.
Perhaps a message from a former champ-champ can persuade the world to change?
Conor McGregor posted a video on Facebook pleading Irish officials to enforce a lockdown of the country. There are over 1,125 cases of the coronavirus in Ireland, with six deaths reported at this time. Dublin as over 470 cases, and testing has been limited in the area. McGregor’s plea is so nobody has to suffer.
“While we are all currently debating a full lockdown, I feel that we must,” McGregor stated. “Any time spent debating this is needless time from the clock. I know a good tough fight when I see one, and we have one on our hands now.
“I want to call upon my people, the great people of Ireland. This fight needs us all. We are all in the red corner together awaiting the bell, so let’s gather together and ring the bell ourselves, including the people of the rest of the world. True lockdown must begin an it must begin now. A lockdown together, a lockdown united. We must close our airports, we must close all non-essential business, we must cut all non-essential travel.”
McGregor (22-4) has been known to be a true public figure and role model for young and old fans alike. While controversial, his words can mean more when faced with a seriousness like the coronavirus.

“Commissioner [Drew] Harris and Vice Admiral [Mark] Mellett, we must prepare and deploy our units to any and all and any known built up areas across our country,” McGregor continued. “Now President [Michael] Higgins, you must give these great men and women the power to enforce this task if necessary.”
Just recently, McGregor lost his aunt. He ended up honoring her, praised the sales of Proper Number Twelve, reflected on his life with his family and encouraged everyone to fight against the virus. Now , the “Notorious” one will use his competitive spirit in order to encourage those to fight hard for change, just like he has fought his entire life.
“We have the advantage here in that we can see this coming… But if we do not act on our advantage, then we cannot expect different results,” McGregor said.
“Ireland, we have got this! Not only do we have the formula, we have it ahead of time. Let’s go Ireland, let’s go rest of the world. A lockdown united. Together, we stand! God bless us all.”
