Melendez To Return At Bellator 242

Although Bellator’s strawweight division doesn’t appear to be making a comeback anytime soon, one fighter can help make a difference.

ESPN was the first to report that Keri Melendez will return to the cage to face Emilee King at Bellator 242.

Melendez (4-0) is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Mandy Polk back at October’s Bellator 229 card. At 35, Melendez joined MMA in 2016, debuting at Bellator 165.

King (4-4) is on a four-fight win streak. Following four losses in a row to start her career, the 27-year-old made a major comeback. She won her Bellator debut back in January, beating Ava Knight via rear-naked choke at Bellator 238.

The last strawweight champion for Bellator was Zoila Gurgel in 2010. She ended up leaving the promotion in 2013 for Invicta FC, and the title has remained vacant since.

Bellator 242 takes place on May 9 from inside the SAP Center in San Jose, California. The main event will be Ryan Bader defending his Light Heavyweight Championship against Vadim Nemkov. The co-main event will be Welterweight Champion Douglas Lima facing Gegard Mousasi for the vacant Bellator Middleweight Championship.
