Michael Chandler Open To Fighting Tony Ferguson At UFC 254
For Michael Chandler, it isn’t too late for a fight with Tony Ferguson.
Chandler is penciled in to serve as a replacement opponent for the UFC 254 main event if he’s needed. The headliner for the October 24 card is scheduled to be a UFC Lightweight Title Unification bout between 155-pound titleholder Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Justin Gaethje.
With Chandler being in a good spot to potentially receive a UFC title bout, one would think that there’s no need for him to accept another fight for the UFC 254 card. Chandler, however, is open to a showdown with “El Cucuy.”
Speaking to MMAJunkie.com, Chandler explained why he’s open to a bout with Ferguson.
“I’m already going Oct. 24th, I’m already making weight, so yes, I would definitely fight him. He’s kind of the only guy that I’m interested in fighting right now. It’s already been talked about, so you don’t add any names to that hat whenever a guy in the top five is already talked about.”
Chandler went on to say that the UFC was offering him up fights with Ferguson and Dustin Poirier before both men had financial issues with the UFC.
“They asked if I’d be willing to fight Dustin Poirier or Tony Ferguson in October and said those guys are scheduled to fight but they’re having money issues and they’re kind of having different issues and whatnot and I said ‘absolutely.’ They (UFC) said, ‘We kind of know the answer to this, but if one of those guys aren’t willing to fight, will you be the backup for the Oct. 24 card? I said ‘absolutely.’”
UFC 254 will be held inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The co-main event will see former UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker going one-on-one with Jared Cannonier. Alexander Volkov vs. Walt Harris is also set for the main card.
